What is a Scalawag?

Have students ask their parents if any ancestor was a Republican in the l860s or l870s. Have them observe parents' reaction when asked.

Ask students if their parents are now Republicans. If so, how long have they been Republicans? Were they ever Democrats? If so, why did they change political parties and did they suffer what nineteenth-century white Southern Republicans suffered?
